When we started Vercept, we set out with a bold vision: to move beyond the mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen and build technology that truly expands human potential. ✨
That mission hasn't changed. It's found a bigger home.

Vercept is an AI startup founded by former researchers at the Allen Institute for AI, a nonprofit research organization, and successfully raised $16 million (approximately 2.5 billion yen) in January 2025. Investors included prominent figures such as former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Jeff Dean , head of Google's AI division, but the company remained small, with fewer than 20 employees.
Vercept was developing an AI agent that could observe computer screens and automate desktop tasks. Its flagship desktop application, 'Vy,' leveraged AI to visually interpret on-screen elements in the same way a human would. Users could instruct Vy through natural language and physical interactions to automate repetitive tasks like data entry, video content creation, and file organization.

On February 25, 2026, local time, Anthropic, known for developing apps such as Claude, announced that it would acquire Vercept. This will result in the integration of Vercept's technology and some of its employees into Anthropic. Vercept's desktop application, Vy, will be shut down within 30 days. In a message to users, Vercept urged them to try Claude as an alternative to Vy.
In a statement about the acquisition, Vercept maintained that its founding vision of building technology that truly advances human potential remains unchanged. 'We were drawn to Anthropic because of our aligned values: a shared belief that technology should be safe, accessible, and built to empower people, not exploit them; responsible development is important; and the future we build should serve all people, including communities that are often left behind,' the company said.
'The Vercept team has years of experience scrutinizing how AI systems can perceive and act within the software we use every day, and their expertise ties directly to some of the most challenging problems we tackle at Anthropic,' Anthropic said in a statement.
Matt Deitke, co-founder of Vercept, who was poached by Meta in 2025 after receiving a huge offer of $250 million over four years, congratulated his former colleagues in a post on X.
Congrats to @ehsanik , @LucaWeihs , and @inkynumbers !

Vercept co-founder and investor Oren Etzioni expressed disappointment over the acquisition in a LinkedIn post, telling GeekWire that while the investment was a positive one, he was 'disappointed to see a company with significant traction and a great team effectively abandon its operations after just over a year.'

In addition, Anthropic acquired the JavaScript runtime ' Bun ' in December 2025 and reported that it had successfully raised $ 30 billion (approximately 4.6 trillion yen) in February 2026.
