Apple officially announces plans to manufacture some Mac Minis in the US

Apple has announced a major expansion of its Houston, Texas facility, and will begin manufacturing Mac mini in the United States for the first time starting in late 2026. This initiative is part of the company's $600 billion (approximately 93 trillion yen) domestic investment plan , and aims to create thousands of jobs and support advanced manufacturing technologies in the United States through expanded production of AI servers and the opening of new educational facilities.

The Houston production will take place at Foxconn's facility, which is expected to double its current size. Products manufactured in the US will primarily serve the North American market, while the company will continue to utilize its Asian facilities for international markets.

The background to this decision was to promote domestic investment in response to the Trump administration's threat of a 25% tariff, and the Mac mini was selected due to its stable demand. While the Mac mini will undergo its first major overhaul since 2010 with the inclusion of the M4 chip in 2024, it remains a niche product, accounting for approximately 5% of total Mac sales, and is priced starting at 94,800 yen. While Apple previously scaled back production of the Mac Pro, which had been assembled in Texas since 2013, due to low demand, the company is more optimistic about demand for the Mac mini.

Apple is also accelerating the manufacturing of its advanced AI servers in Houston, with production beginning in 2025 and progressing faster than originally planned. The servers, which feature logic boards manufactured locally, are used in Apple data centers across the US.

Also opening later this year is a 21,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston, where Apple experts will provide direct training to students and supplier workers in innovative manufacturing processes. This builds on the success of the Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, which is already training more than 130 small and medium-sized manufacturers.

Apple's American manufacturing program is extensive, with the company already sourcing more than 20 billion domestically produced chips from 24 domestic factory partners, including TSMC, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments. GlobalWafers operates a $4 billion wafer fab in Sherman, Texas, and Amkor is building a $7 billion semiconductor packaging facility in Peoria, Arizona, with Apple as its largest customer.

It also plans to purchase more than 100 million advanced chips from TSMC's Arizona factory in 2026, a significant increase from the previous year. Corning's Kentucky facility also specializes in glass production for iPhones and Apple Watches, and by the end of the year, all new models shipped worldwide are expected to use glass made in Kentucky.
