Is your smartphone storage capacity enough? We investigated how GIGAZINE readers solve the problem of insufficient storage space on their smartphones.

When using a smartphone, installing useful apps, playing new games, taking photos and videos, and so on can often lead to the storage capacity becoming full before you know it, making it impossible to install new apps. We conducted a survey of GIGAZINE readers to find out how many people are actually struggling with insufficient smartphone storage and what kind of cloud storage they use to alleviate this.

The results of the question 'Do you have enough storage space on your smartphone?' are as follows. About 77% of respondents said they had enough storage space, about 21% said they didn't, and about 2% said they didn't have a smartphone.

When asked, 'Do you use cloud storage?', the results were as follows: Approximately 62% of respondents said they use it, while 38% said they do not. Since over 60% of users use cloud storage, it seems that GIGAZINE readers are not using cloud storage because they are worried about running out of storage space on their smartphones, but rather because they are using cloud storage to avoid running out of storage space on their smartphones.

Next, we asked cloud storage users which services they use. The most popular was Google Drive (approximately 41%), followed by Apple's iCloud (approximately 21%) and Microsoft's OneDrive (approximately 19%). Google Drive was twice as popular as iCloud and OneDrive. Dropbox, once synonymous with cloud storage, accounted for approximately 11% of users.

The results of the question 'Would you like to use cloud storage?' asked users who do not use cloud storage. About 20% answered that they would like to use it, and the remaining 80% answered that they would not like to use it. In other words, it seems that about 70% of GIGAZINE readers are using cloud storage or would like to use it.

When asked which cloud storage service they would like to use, the following results were obtained: Google Drive (approximately 44%), iCloud (approximately 26%), OneDrive (14%), and Dropbox (9%). The percentage of users who use Google Drive is roughly the same as the percentage of users who actually use cloud storage, but the percentage of users who want to use iCloud is higher than the percentage who actually use it, and the percentage of users who want to use OneDrive is lower than the percentage who actually use it.

Among those who said they would like to use cloud storage, we asked them how much storage they would like to have: The most common answer was 10GB (about 19%), followed by 1TB (about 17%), 30GB (16%), 2TB (about 6.5%), and 5GB (about 6.3%), alternating between large and relatively small storage capacities.
