Google develops platform to analyze skiers and snowboarders' skills in real time using AI at the Winter Olympics

Google has revealed that it has built a training tool that uses AI to analyze video footage to support Olympic ski and snowboard athletes, who require millimeter-level edge control and trick height.

The US Winter Olympics team, which includes snowboarder Maddie Mastro and skier Alex Hall , has teamed up with Google to build the industry's first 'AI-powered video analytics platform.'

Until now, high-precision motion capture, like that used in movies and medical research, required specialized capture suits and specialized environments. But by leveraging Google DeepMind's research in spatial intelligence, Google has created technology that can map athletes' movements from video footage, even while they're wearing their athletic gear. The analysis can be completed in just a few minutes, before the athlete gets on the lift for another run.

Based on the analysis results, athletes and coaches can quickly review their movements. Hall, a gold medalist at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, said, 'In areas where I previously relied on intuition, by looking at the data, I can go further.'

One of the unique features of this technology is that it can be operated using a palm-sized device that fits in a skier's glove, which is a major advantage for the team as it allows analysis to be carried out in near real time on the slopes, without the need to travel to a base or lab.

Additionally, while previously it was necessary to search for footage of a trick from five years ago, the tool allows users to instantly view past skating performances and accurately check the position of their head and body in slow motion. In the promotional video, users can see details such as the trajectory of their skating performance, the height of their jumps, and even compare their tricks with those of other skaters.

It will be exciting to see what kind of results the American team will show at the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
