Broken links are an inevitable part of the internet over time, and there are many reasons why they can happen: pages may move, domains may not be updated, or websites may be shut down.

A 2024 Pew Research Center study found that approximately 40% of links that existed in 2013 would be broken by 2024.

To solve this problem, the Internet Archive has announced a collaboration with Automattic, the developer of WordPress. As part of the collaboration, they are releasing a new free WordPress plugin called the Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer to address the broken links issue.

The Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer can be downloaded for free from the link below.

Internet Archive Wayback Machine Link Fixer works in the background of your WordPress website to protect your content and your readers' experience. It automatically scans external links in your posts, checks if they exist on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, and creates an archive if they don't.

If a link on a web page becomes dead, the plugin will automatically redirect visitors to an archive on the Wayback Machine, keeping your content relevant and ensuring readers never lose track of what they're looking for.

It also archives posts as they are updated, allowing you to keep a long-term record of your website's history. Links are continually checked, so the plugin is designed to stop redirecting to archived versions once the original link is working again.

Regarding their collaboration with the Internet Archive, Automattic said, 'This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to protecting the open web. Since 1996, the Wayback Machine has been preserving the digital history of the internet, and we are honored to bring that mission directly to WordPress sites around the world.'
