Blue Origin announces 'TeraWave', a satellite communications network that enables symmetric communications of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth

Blue Origin, a space company led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has announced TeraWave , a satellite communications network that uses more than 5,000 low- and medium-orbit satellites to provide communication speeds of up to

6Tbps to anywhere on Earth.

According to Blue Origin, TeraWave's multi-orbit design optically connects 5,408 satellites placed in low and medium orbits, enabling ultra-high-speed communications between global hubs and distributed multi-gigabit user connections.

A major advantage is that high-speed communications can be used even in remote areas where laying optical fiber is difficult due to technical and cost issues.

TeraWave's enterprise-grade user and gateway devices can be rapidly deployed around the world and connect to existing high-capacity infrastructure to provide route diversity and enhance overall network resiliency.

The unique design combines high-performance wireless and optical connectivity, enabling access to 5,280 low-earth orbit satellites at up to 144Gbps via Q/V band connections, and 128 medium-earth orbit satellites at up to 6Tbps via optical links.

By the way, conventional adversarial satellite communication networks are asymmetric communications, with download speeds of up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 400 Mbps, but Blue Origin claims that TeraWave is symmetrical communications, so the upload speed is the same.

The maximum number of customers is said to be 100,000.

The service is expected to begin rolling out in the fourth quarter of 2027.
