Wikimedia Enterprise is the commercial division of the Wikimedia Foundation, announced in March 2021. It allows users to access vast amounts of data in various formats, including web APIs and data from specific periods, for free, in addition to reading Wikipedia. Google will be its first customer in 2022, and it was announced that the Internet Archive has signed up without paying a service fee.
Additionally, in November 2025, Wikipedia issued a statement encouraging AI developers who use Wikipedia to provide proper attribution and use paid APIs. Including attribution indicating Wikipedia as the source of the information in the output of generated AI not only clarifies the source of the information, but also prevents a decrease in access to Wikipedia and a decline in volunteers who enrich its content. Furthermore, by using Wikimedia Enterprise, it is possible to learn large amounts of content without overloading Wikipedia's servers, thereby directly supporting Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia Foundation announced on January 15, 2026, that Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity have joined Wikimedia Enterprises as partners. The Wikimedia Foundation states, 'We are helping the work of volunteer communities around the world reach billions of people while maintaining the accuracy and transparency that Wikipedia stands for.'
The Wikimedia Foundation says Microsoft, Perplexity, and Mistral AI have joined the enterprise program 'over the past year.' Meta and Amazon are listed as 'existing partners,' but this is their first time being officially announced.
Lane Becker, senior director of revenue at the Wikimedia Foundation, told The Verge, 'Wikimedia Enterprises provides a version of Wikipedia tailored for commercial use and AI companies. We receive feature requests, build features, and strive to structure data in a way that supports the needs of these companies. Supporting the long-term sustainability of Wikipedia is in the best interest of any AI company, because Wikipedia and all the other projects we support are core to their business.'
