A new feature called 'Personal Intelligence' will be added, allowing Gemini to read photos and emails and become your own personal assistant.

Introducing ' Personal Intelligence ,' a feature that uses Google's AI, Gemini, to read information stored in Gmail and Google Photos to personalize your experience. By enabling Personal Intelligence, it can infer user characteristics from emails and photos and provide appropriate answers.

Personal Intelligence: Connecting Gemini to Google apps

With Personal Intelligence, you can have Gemini read data from 'Gmail,' 'Google Calendar,' 'Google Drive,' 'Google Photos,' 'YouTube,' and 'Google Search.'

Here's an example of how Personal Intelligence can be used: First, say, 'I'm going to change my car tires, so please recommend something.'

Based on information from Google Photos and other sources, the app recognized that I drive a Honda Odyssey and that I often travel to nature parks, and recommended all-weather tires for the Odyssey.

He then asked, 'What was the Odyssey's license plate number?'

Gemini gave me the exact number. While Gemini itself can't identify information like the car a user owns or their license plate number, Personal Intelligence lets you load information from Google Photos and other sources to provide personalized answers.

However, Personal Intelligence can sometimes misinterpret user information. For example, even if you say, 'I don't like golf, but I go to the golf course for my son,' Personal Intelligence may still recognize you as 'a golfer' based on information from Google Photos and other sources. In this case, you can update Gemini's recognition by explaining to Gemini, 'I don't like golf. I just take my son to the golf course.'

The information handled by Personal Intelligence is managed by Google from the beginning, and there is no need to send data to any company other than Google. Google is promoting the fact that 'it uses information securely managed by Google' as a differentiating factor from other AIs.

Even with Personal Intelligence, photos and emails are not used to train Gemini. Gemini is also designed not to proactively approach users about sensitive information such as their health status, but can still engage in conversations about their health status if instructed by the user.

Personal Intelligence will be rolled out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US starting January 14, 2026, with plans to expand to more countries and plans in the future.
