Appfigures , a research company for the smartphone app market, has released part of its annual report for 2025. While the number of app downloads overall is declining, the amount spent on apps is increasing.

The graph below shows the trend in global app downloads across the App Store and Google Play combined. The number of downloads in 2025 is expected to be 106.9 billion, down 2.7% from 109.8 billion in 2024.



On the other hand, total in-game purchases in 2025 were $155.8 billion (approximately ¥24.7 trillion), an increase of 21.6% from 2024. Also, total in-game purchases in 2025 were $72.2 billion (approximately ¥11.4 trillion), accounting for 46% of all in-game purchases.

The most downloaded game app worldwide in December 2025 was the Tetris-style puzzle game 'Block Blast,' with a combined total of 30.4 million downloads across the App Store and Google Play. Also, the smartphone version of Red Dead Redemption, released free for Netflix subscribers, ranked third on the App Store with 5 million downloads.
