'You always suspect that the algorithms of food delivery apps are working against you, but the reality is far more dire than conspiracy theories,' wrote an anonymous person who said he works for a food delivery app company. He claimed food delivery apps exploit legal loopholes to steal tips and wages from delivery workers.
The post appeared on Reddit's front page, garnering over 87,000 likes, and was also heavily shared on X. One of the posts sharing the Reddit whistleblower's story on X has been reposted over 39,000 times, liked over 200,000 times, bookmarked over 65,000 times, and has received over 36.96 million impressions at the time of writing.

The whistleblower's post on Reddit has been deleted at the time of writing, but screenshots of the post circulating on X claim that the food delivery app embezzled 'priority delivery fees' and 'driver benefits fees.'
In fact, food delivery app DoorDash was once sued for embezzling tips paid to delivery workers and paid a $16.75 million settlement .
Uber Eats, which is widely used in Japan, also has many cases where delivery workers are dissatisfied with Uber because they feel they are not being paid the correct wages. To solve this problem, an app called 'UberCheats' has been launched, which calculates the exact distance traveled by Uber delivery workers.
Uber Eats delivery drivers developed the app 'UberCheats' to address concerns about underpayment. Data also shows that 17% of Uber deliveries, including in Japan, were underpaid.

Journalist Casey Newton contacted the Reddit poster, who shared a photo of what appears to be an Uber Eats employee badge and an 18-page ' internal document ' explaining that Uber uses AI to calculate each driver's 'despair score.'
Newton wrote that he realized the images were created by AI while verifying the authenticity of the whistleblower's testimony. Specifically, Newton used Google's Gemini to check whether the images sent by the whistleblower were created by AI, and noticed signs that they were AI-generated.
'For most of my career, I've assumed that whistleblower documents are highly credible because they take so long to produce,' Newton wrote. 'Who would create an 18-page detailed technical document on market trends just to fool a reporter? Who would go to the trouble of making a fake badge?'
There are tools for detecting AI-generated text, but when it comes to multimedia content that combines text, images, audio, and video, AI detection tools are not necessarily reliable, according to technology media TechCrunch.
And even if a fake post is revealed to be AI-generated, it may have already spread across the internet before it becomes clear. 'For now, we can only scroll through social media like detectives, questioning whether what we see is real or not,' TechCrunch wrote.
