Danish Post will deliver its last mail on December 30, 2025, marking the end of its 400-year history

Denmark's national postal company, Postnord, will end almost all mail delivery services on December 30, 2025, due to a significant decline in the number of letters delivered.

According to Postnord, the number of letters and other mail deliveries in Denmark is rapidly declining due to the advancement of digitalization, with the number handled falling from 1.4 billion in 2000 to just 110 million by 2024. Considering the population of Denmark, this means that on average, each person receives only about one letter per month. This is extremely low compared to the average of eight letters received per month in the UK and Japan.
Despite this, Postnord was obliged to operate a universal service for mail, which resulted in significant losses and compensation from the Danish government, which was expected to reach 150 million Danish kroner (approximately 3.7 billion yen) by 2023.
However, under the new Postal Act that came into effect on January 1, 2024, Post Nord will no longer be responsible for universal service, with the exception of mail for the visually impaired, mail to remote islands, and international mail. Therefore, the decision was made to end mail delivery from 2026 onwards and focus on parcel delivery. International mail will also be handled by Post Nord until the end of 2025, after which the Ministry of Transport will select a contractor through bidding and other means.

Post Nord will continue to collect, sort, and deliver mail until December 30, 2025. Furthermore, the removal of 1,500 mailboxes installed nationwide began on June 1, 2025, and they are scheduled to disappear completely by the end of 2025. Additionally, an estimated 1,500 of Post Nord's approximately 4,600 employees are
Postnord also operates a universal service business in Sweden, but this decision does not affect Sweden.
Danish citizens can continue to send letters and other mail using the private company Dao. Dao already delivers letters within Denmark, but from January 1, 2026, it plans to expand its service, increasing the number of letters it can deliver from about 30 million in 2025 to 80 million. However, customers will need to visit a Dao store to mail their mail or pay an additional fee to have it collected.

Danish law requires that citizens have a means of sending letters, so if Dao were to stop handling mail, the government would be obligated to select an alternative carrier. A Ministry of Transport official said, 'There will be no substantive changes in the new fiscal year. Mail will simply be sent via a different company. This change is purely sentimental.'
Denmark is a digital nation, and its national digital ID system, MitID, is used for everything from online banking to signing documents electronically and making doctor's appointments. All government communications are automatically sent via digital mail, rather than postal mail. While there's an option to receive physical mail, few people actually use it, with only 5% opting out of digital mail.
