The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) , a Disney-owned television network, has held the exclusive broadcasting rights to the Academy Awards since 1976. However, ABC's contract with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is set to expire after the 100th Academy Awards ceremony in 2028.
On December 17, 2025, local time, YouTube announced that it had signed a multi-year deal with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to exclusively stream the Academy Awards ceremony on YouTube from 2029 to 2033.
In a statement, YouTube said, 'The Academy Awards are the highest honor for anyone who loves film, the arts, and storytelling. And now, YouTube is partnering with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bring this prestigious tradition to a global audience. Starting in 2029, the Academy Awards will be streamed exclusively for free worldwide on YouTube and on YouTube TV in the US. We'll also offer coverage from the red carpet, behind-the-scenes content, access to Governors Hall (the official after-party), and more.'

According to a source familiar with the matter, YouTube will continue to insert commercials during its broadcast of the Oscars. The hope is that the transfer of broadcasting rights from the TV networks to YouTube will make the Oscars more accessible to people around the world through features like captions and audio tracks in multiple languages.
'We are thrilled to enter into this multifaceted global partnership with YouTube, making it the future home of the Academy Awards and our year-round programming,' Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor jointly said in a statement. 'This partnership will enable us to reach even larger audiences around the world with our films.'
'The Academy Awards are one of our essential cultural institutions, celebrating excellence in storytelling and artistry,' said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan . 'Our partnership with the Academy Awards will bring this celebration of arts and entertainment to a global audience, upholding the awards' illustrious tradition and inspiring a new generation of creativity and film lovers.'
According to Variety, ABC and NBCUniversal had offered tens of millions of dollars for the exclusive broadcasting rights to the Academy Awards, but YouTube offered more than $100 million. ABC's parent company, Disney, was reportedly considering cutting licensing fees in response to declining viewership for the Academy Awards in recent years.
The move of the Oscars from a fixed television broadcast to a YouTube stream, which has fewer time constraints, could potentially give them more freedom over the length and content of the ceremony. A source told Variety, 'They could do anything. They could even have a six-hour Oscars ceremony hosted by Mr. Beast .'
