Gemini will be integrated into Google Maps to enhance driving assistance functions, and it will also provide guidance using landmarks such as 'turn right at the corner of the restaurant' instead of distance.

The AI 'Gemini' will be integrated into Google Maps to enhance navigation and voice control while driving. Google describes it as 'like having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat who will confidently guide you to your destination' because it supports guidance through natural conversations.

The first new feature is the introduction of Gemini to Google Maps, which allows drivers to get directions by simply asking, share their arrival time with friends, and add events to their calendar while driving, all by just using their voice.
Gemini can also understand complex directions, such as, 'Are there any vegan restaurants within a few kilometers along my route that fit my budget?' or 'What's the parking like there?'

Gemini will also be rolling out a feature that will allow users to instantly detect traffic congestion by simply reporting, for example, 'There's an accident,' or 'It looks like there's flooding ahead.' These features will be rolled out to Android and iOS devices in Gemini-compatible regions in the coming weeks.
The second feature is the ability to guide you to your destination using real-world landmarks. Car navigation systems often say things like, 'Turn right in XX meters,' but distance-based instructions aren't easy for everyone to understand. So, Gemini guides you based on visible landmarks, such as, 'Turn left at the next corner after this traffic light,' or 'Turn right at the Thai restaurant ahead in 30 meters.'

Gemini analyzes the 250 million locations Google Maps owns and matches them with Street View imagery to select the most useful landmarks visible from the road. The feature is currently rolling out in the US for Android and iOS.
The third feature is traffic congestion notifications. Google Maps will now notify users of traffic congestion even when they're not using the navigation feature, so they can check road conditions before they set off. This feature is currently rolling out to the US Android version.

The fourth feature is the integration of Google Maps, Google Lens, and Gemini. When users tap the camera icon in the Google Maps search bar and hold their smartphone, Gemini will identify restaurants, cafes, stores, and famous landmarks within their field of view. Users can tap the microphone icon to ask questions such as, 'What kind of place is this and why is it popular?' and 'What's the atmosphere like inside?' The Google Lens feature powered by Gemini is scheduled to be rolled out in the US for Android and iOS starting in late November 2025.
