According to overseas media Beebom, the ad-supported free plan added to Microsoft 365 can be used fromthe desktop version of Microsoft 365 apps . The free plan includes three apps: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Once the app has finished downloading, launch any Office app from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. A pop-up dialog will appear, so click 'Skip for now.'

A plan selection screen will appear, so if you click 'Continue for free', you will be able to use the free plan with ads.

The free plan with ads will have a permanent banner ad on the right side, as well as a 15-second video ad that will play every few hours.

You can't save documents locally, you have to save them all to OneDrive. In addition, the free plan doesn't include features like wrapping text or inserting shapes in Word, inserting charts in Excel, or inserting headers and footers in PowerPoint.
In addition, when I actually tried it, the pop-up dialog did not show 'Skip for now' at the time of writing, and I was not able to use the free plan. A Microsoft spokesperson said, 'Microsoft is conducting some limited testing. This free version of Microsoft 365 is part of that. We do not currently have plans to release a free version of the Microsoft 365 desktop app with ads.'
