Apple's original 'Maps' will also change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'

President Donald Trump has announced that the name of the Gulf of Mexico in the southern United States will be officially changed to 'Gulf of the United States.' In response, Google has changed the name of the Gulf of the United States on Google Maps, and it has been reported that Apple will also follow suit and change the name of the Gulf of the United States on its original Maps app.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on January 24, 2025. In response, Google announced that it would reflect the name change in Google Maps, in accordance with its practice of 'applying name changes to Google Maps when the government's official name is changed.'

While Google Maps quickly announced the changes, Apple did not immediately follow suit, which led to criticism from Republican members of Congress. For example, Republican Congressman Greg Stube posted a comment on Facebook criticizing Apple's stance, saying, 'Google Maps updated to the Gulf of America. Apple is still on the Gulf of Mexico.'

In response to this, Apple will also change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' for US users in its Maps app for macOS and iOS starting February 11, 2025.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, an Apple insider, said the company will soon roll out the change to all users worldwide.

Gurman noted that Google and Apple have been cozying up to the Trump administration, saying, 'Since President Trump's victory, tech executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, have accompanied him to various events, including the inauguration.'

Other major map services include Microsoft's Bing Maps and MapQuest, but neither of them have changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico at the time of writing.
