Apple offers iCloud Keychain as a feature for managing various passwords within the iOS Settings app. Bloomberg reported that Apple is planning to offer this feature as a password management app like 1Password or LastPass. Apple will name its original password management app 'Passwords' and provide it for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

According to sources who provided information to Bloomberg, Passwords will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 and will be announced during WWDC24. WWDC24 is scheduled to be held on June 11, 2024, Japan time, and if it is the same as usual, the keynote speech will be delivered from 2:00 a.m.

Passwords will be an app based on iCloud Keychain, which allows you to sync passwords and account information across different devices. Until now, iCloud Keychain has existed in the Settings app and was displayed when you tried to log in to a website, etc.

By offering this feature as a standalone app, Apple plans to allow more users to manage their passwords securely and improve privacy on their devices, but the move also increases competition from third-party software. Apple will also allow users to import password information into Passwords from rival services such as 1Password and LastPass.

Passwords also displays your account information in various categories, including Wi-Fi networks, passkeys , etc. Like a typical password manager, Passwords will automatically fill in the password information when you try to log in to your account.

Passwords also works with Apple Vision Pro and Windows, and can function as an authentication app like Google Authenticator.

Bloomberg has reached out to Apple for comment, but a company spokesperson declined to comment.
