Mistral AI releases chat AI 'Le Chat' for iOS and Android, it can be used in Japanese too, so I tried it out

On February 7, 2025, the mobile version of 'Le Chat', a chat AI from French AI development company Mistral AI, was released on iOS and Android. It was also possible to install it in Japan, so I tried it out to see what kind of chat AI it was.

The Le Chat mobile app lets you ask questions like, 'What's happening in the AC Milan game?' and instantly tells you the result.

You can also ask for movie recommendations.

You can also take a photo of a wine bottle and receive recommendations for chocolate pairings.

You can also have it generate images for birthday cards, analyze data and generate graphs.

Le Chat is also significantly faster than Claude and ChatGPT, processing 1,100 tokens per second on an updated Mistral Large flush query.

The mobile version of Le Chat was available for installation in Japan, so I tried installing the iOS version this time. Access the App Store distribution page and tap 'Get'.
Once the installation is complete, tap 'Open.'

First, you will be asked if you have a Mistral AI account, but even if you don't have an account, you can use it by selecting 'Skip login for now'. This time, tap 'Skip login for now'.

You will be asked to agree to the terms of use, so once you have confirmed, tap 'Accept and continue'.

This opens the Le Chat home screen. I wanted to know if I could speak Japanese, so I typed 'Can you speak Japanese?' in the input form at the bottom and tapped the send button.

Le Chat responded, 'Yes, I can speak Japanese. Please let me know if there's anything I can help you with.'

I tried asking 'What's the weather like in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo today?' but I didn't get a response. Instead, I got links to weather websites such as Weathernews and the Japan Weather Association. I then tried asking about sports game results, but it seemed to have a hard time answering current questions.

Next, I asked a question unrelated to current events: 'Today's maximum temperature is 6.1 degrees. What kind of clothes do you recommend for men?' In response, he gave me advice on jackets, tops, pants, etc. The content of his answer seemed quite appropriate.

When I asked, 'Please suggest a simple recipe using chicken thighs and cabbage,' he gave me a recipe for stir-fried chicken thighs with cabbage. The response was quite smooth, and there didn't seem to be any problem with the recipe.

On the other hand, when I asked them to recommend tourist spots in Okinawa, they recommended

This time I asked, 'Please design an illustration for a wedding card to give as a wedding gift to a friend.' But I was refused because I couldn't design the illustration in my current environment. It seems that in order to use the image generation function, you need to create an account and log in to Mistral AI. Also, I had to create an account and log in to upload photos and files.
