The Château de Gedrun in northern Burgundy, France, is set to have been built in 1228 by a fictitious minor lord named Gilbert in Pouissai, ruled by Jean de Toucy .

Architect Jacques Moulin applied for a building permit for Gedrun Castle to the local Treigny town hall in the spring of 1997. The building permit was granted on July 25, 1997, and construction of Gedrun Castle began. Architect Florian Renucci's architectural plans for Gedrun Castle, which has six towers, were modeled after the Château de Latilly .

The aim of the Gedrun Castle project is to test medieval building tools and working methods that are difficult to interpret, to build with different options, such as the chemical composition of lime mortar, and to compile a comprehensive and up-to-date database of architectural styles in medieval Europe. Pouissay was chosen for this reason, as building materials are easily accessible. In building the castle, the project team studied surviving medieval buildings, stained glass, manuscripts, as well as symposium reports, papers and excavation records. Field surveys were also carried out in the medieval European castles of

Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines , Ratilly , Yévre-le-Chatel and Dourdan .

The construction of Gedrun Castle is being carried out using medieval building methods, with the cooperation of quarrymen, stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, tile makers, etc. At the time of writing, Gedrun Castle employs 100 staff, 40 of whom are directly involved in the construction.

Construction of Gedrun Castle has been underway since 1997, and it has been gradually progressing towards completion. In 2002, work began on the chapel tower, the largest of Gedrun Castle's six towers. In 2010, the building known as the 'North Range' was completed. In 2014, construction work began on the chapel.

A roof was installed on the chapel tower in 2019.

The project team said: 'One of the pitfalls for us is that Gedrun Castle is perceived as merely an architectural feat. We must not build a sophisticated Gedrun Castle to the detriment of its stylistic, architectural and chronological consistency, and thus satisfy the tastes of some people. Our main aim is to recreate the most common features of castles from this period. To achieve this, we visited various medieval castles, took photographs, made sketches, etc.'

The Gedrun Castle, which is currently under construction, will be open to the public for a limited time, during which visitors can enjoy activities such as baking bread.
