Construction of Sagrada Familia, designed by Gaudi, began in 1882. Gaudi's design calls for a total of 18 towers to be built, symbolizing the 12 Christian apostles, the four

evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus.

At the time of Gaudi's death in 1926, Sagrada Familia had only an estimated 10% to 15% of the project completed, including the crypt and the Nativity façade.

Construction was then interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s, and many of Gaudi's blueprints, designs, and models were destroyed. This made it impossible to fully realize Gaudí's vision, and a debate arose as to whether construction of the Sagrada Familia should continue. Construction continues even today by inferring Gaudi's design philosophy based on materials.
