Lynch was born in Montana, USA in 1946. His father was a researcher for the Department of Agriculture, so he moved many times from the age of two months. He was not particularly good at school, but after graduating from high school he went on to study painting at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC, before transferring to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1964.

After that, Lynch studied abroad in Austria for about two weeks. After returning to the United States, he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts and Sciences, married a classmate, bought a house in a dangerous industrial area, and devoted himself to painting.

Lynch created a short film as an assignment for the Academy, which was highly praised, and he became interested in filmmaking. He made his first short film, 'Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times),' and a four-minute film, 'Alphabet,' which combined animation and live action, in the basement of his house. He also continued to make films while receiving a grant from the Motion Picture Association of America.

In 1970, he enrolled in the AFI Conservatory, a film school in Hollywood, to study filmmaking in earnest. During his time at the AFI Conservatory, he produced 'Eraserhead,' a film that reflected his experience when his wife was pregnant and gave birth. 'Eraserhead' took about four years to complete, but was rejected by the New York Film Festival due to its difficult content and shocking images. After screening it at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the distributor liked it and it was shown late at night in movie theaters across the country. These late-night screenings earned 'Eraserhead' a cult following.

In 1980, Lynch released '

The Elephant Man ,' a film depicting the life of Joseph Merrick, a real man who lived in 19th century England. The film was highly praised and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. At that time, George Lucas, a fan of 'Eraserhead,' approached Lynch about directing ' Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, ' but Lynch turned it down.

In 1984, Dune, a film adaptation of the science fiction novel of the same name, was released, but was a critical and commercial failure. His subsequent film Blue Velvet was highly praised and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. In 1990, he directed the TV drama Twin Peaks. When Twin Peaks began airing, it quickly achieved a viewer rating of over 20%, became a worldwide hit, and was made into a movie in 1992.

In parallel with Twin Peaks, he also produced the film

Wild at Heart , which was not as well received in the United States but won the Palme d'Or , the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990.

He later directed films such as ' Lost Highway ,' ' Straight Story ,' ' Mulholland Drive, ' and ' Inland Empire .' In 2006, he announced his retirement from feature film direction, but continued to produce films and received an Academy Honorary Award in 2019. In 2020, his short film ' What Did Jack Do? ', which depicts the interrogation of a monkey suspected in a murder case, was released on Netflix and became a hot topic.

In 2024, Lynch announced that he had been diagnosed with emphysema . Lynch said, 'This emphysema is due to years of smoking, and I will not be able to directly direct any projects in the future,' and projects in production were also put on hold. Lynch had announced, 'I am in good health and have no plans to retire. I am working on existing projects as much as possible,' but on January 16, 2025, it was announced on his Facebook page that Lynch had passed away.

Lynch's family commented, 'Now that he is gone, there is a huge hole in the world, but as he often said, 'Focus on the donut, not the hole.''
