After Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter (now X) , Mastodon saw a steady stream of users who were uneasy about Musk's reforms, and as of January 13, 2025, the number of monthly active users was 838,000.
On January 13, 2025, Mastodon announced that it would establish a new non-profit organization in Europe and transfer the core ecosystem and platform components, including the name, copyright, and other assets, owned by Mastodon GmbH, the operating organization of Mastodon, to the non-profit organization.
Mastodon states, 'When Mastodon establishes a non-profit organization in the United States in April 2024, multiple organizations will be involved in the operation of Mastodon's code and platform. Going forward, Mastodon's organizational structure will undergo further transformation and we will take a step forward as a European non-profit organization. We have always believed that Mastodon should not be owned or controlled by a single individual.'
He also said, 'When Mastodon's founder Eugen Rochko started developing Mastodon, he was focused on creating the code and conditions for the social networking site he envisioned. Therefore, the legal structure was merely a means to an end and to continue operating. He declared from the beginning that 'Mastodon will not be for sale and will be free from the control of a single wealthy individual.''
According to Mastodon, it will continue to host the Mastodon social network servers, mastodon.social and mastodon.online , and will focus on developing tools and digital spaces where people can build constructive online communities free from advertising, data exploitation, manipulative algorithms, and corporate monopolies.
Mastodon says, 'In 2025, we need to increase our annual operating budget to €5 million (approximately 800 million yen). With these additional funds, we will grow our team, invest in the safety of our community, and continue to build the world's freest and most open social network, Fediverse .' We are asking for financial support from our users and community.
