On January 7, 2025, the US government announced the US Cyber Trust Mark, a certification label for IoT devices that meet the cybersecurity standards of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The US Cyber Trust Mark is scheduled to appear on smart devices sold in the US from the second half of 2025.

In recent years, smart devices that can perform various operations such as locking the front door and turning the air conditioner on and off have been sold and are used by many consumers. However, these smart devices may be susceptible to security vulnerabilities, and the risk is a concern. The US government also points out that 'Many Americans are concerned about the increase in criminals trying to remotely hack into home security systems to unlock doors, and malicious attackers trying to illegally record residents' conversations using compromised home cameras.'
Therefore, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposed the 'US Cyber Trust Mark' program in July 2023 to enable American consumers to choose smart devices that are safer and less susceptible to hacker attacks. At the time of the announcement, major vendors and manufacturers such as Amazon, Google, Best Buy, LG Electronics USA, Logitech, and Samsung Electronics had announced their participation.
The US Cyber Trust Mark will affix a 'US Cyber Trust Mark' logo sticker to products that meet the cybersecurity standards set by NIST, such as 'use of unique and strong default passwords,' 'appropriate data protection,' 'appropriate software updates,' and 'incident detection capabilities.' Consumers can scan the QR code on the sticker to view additional security information, such as instructions for changing default passwords, instructions for securely configuring devices, details of automatic updates, product support organizations, and notifications when the manufacturer does not provide updates for the device.
In December 2024, the FCC approved 11 companies, including CSA America Testing & Certification, Intertek Testing Services NA, and Palindrome Technologies, as cybersecurity label administrators, responsible for the day-to-day management of the program and certifying use of the US Cyber Trust
The US government officially announced the US Cyber Trust Mark on January 7, 2025. The US Cyber Trust Mark will be displayed on consumer smart devices such as home security cameras, TVs, internet-connected devices, fitness trackers, and air conditioning control systems released in the US from the second half of 2025 onwards, providing consumers with an indication of whether the devices they want to purchase can be safely installed in their homes.
'Companies will soon be able to submit their products for testing to obtain the label, and companies like Best Buy and Amazon will be able to highlight their labeled products,' the U.S. government said. 'Just as the international Energy Star program has made deep impacts on the public and created incentives for manufacturers to offer more energy-efficient home appliances, we believe the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark will pave the way for the sale of more secure smart devices.'
