CSA, the organization that developed the smart home standard 'Matter,' announced that the Apple, Google, and Samsung ecosystems will accept the certification test results

At the time of writing, when purchasing a smart home product, you need to check the certification badges such as 'Works with Apple Home' and 'Works with Google' to see which ecosystem it is connected to.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) , the organization that developed the new smart home standard ' Matter ', has announced that it will start a program to test Matter-compatible devices on behalf of manufacturers and send the results to them to obtain ecosystem certification.

Matter is a standard that enables interoperability between various device manufacturers and IoT platforms. Previously, users had to select smart home products that were compatible with the ecosystem they had already implemented, and they could not combine products from manufacturers with different ecosystems. However, with the advent of Matter, smart home products that are compatible with Matter can now be operated as the same smart home system regardless of the manufacturer.

However, many Matter-enabled device manufacturers still need to complete the CSA certification process and then participate in the testing of major smart home ecosystems such as Apple and Google to obtain the 'Works With ____' certification badge, which places a significant burden on manufacturers.

Therefore, the CSA announced that it will begin 'end-to-end certification and testing' of Matter- compatible devices on January 6, 2025. In this program, the necessary tests will be performed at the CSA-established Interop Lab in Portland, Oregon, USA, and the results will be sent to manufacturers that operate ecosystems, so that devices can be given a certification badge for each ecosystem.

Apple has already accepted the 'Works With Apple Home' certification program through the CSA, and Google and Samsung will also launch 'Works With Google Home' and 'Works With SmartThings' certification programs through the CSA in the second half of 2025. Amazon, which is also a member of Matter, has not revealed whether it will participate in the 'Works With Alexa' certification program through the CSA at the time of writing.

Additionally, the CSA also announced two new programs to accelerate the Matter certification process for smart home products: the FastTrack Recertification Program and the Portfolio Certification Program.

The FastTrack Recertification program checks smart home products in the Interop Lab when software updates are made to quickly identify bugs and security issues, while the Portfolio Certification program certifies multiple member products in the same application portfolio based on the test results of a manufacturer's parent product, both of which help simplify the Matter certification process for smart home products and save costs and time.

'We continue to drive innovation and efficiency with the Interop Lab's vast capabilities and the launch of our FastTrack recertification and Portfolio Certification programs,' said CSA. 'These services address key challenges for manufacturers by simplifying the certification process and reducing costs, while enabling rapid product updates without compromising performance or quality.'
