Since 2019, the number of game releases on Steam has been steadily increasing, and has maintained growth even during the pandemic of 2020. The total number of game titles released in 2024 was 18,864 at the time of writing, significantly higher than the 14,311 released the previous year.
Of these, 3,946 are classified as regular games and 14,918 as 'Limited Games'.
A restricted game is a title that does not meet certain criteria, such as the number of players or the number of copies sold, and has limited access to Steam trading cards and profile customization features. Restricted games do not count toward the totals of game collectors or achievement collectors. IT news site Tom's Hardware points out that 'the mass release of restricted games is often low-quality, easy-to-play commercial titles.'
Meanwhile, the average number of titles played by Steam users was four, the same as the previous year, but down from five in 2022. The number of active users during the holiday season reached approximately 40 million, an increase of approximately 8 million from the previous year.
SteamDB has also announced
Valve, which operates Steam, has indicated that it will not release a new product annually for the successor to its portable gaming PC ' Steam Deck ' until a generational shift in computing performance is realized. However, PC manufacturers such as MSI have released alternative Windows-based portable gaming PCs, and Lenovo and ASUS are also scheduled to enter the market in early 2025.
