Microsoft CEO says Google is making more money from Windows than Microsoft

Since most PCs use Windows, it is often thought that Microsoft, the developer of Windows, is the company that makes the most money from Windows-related activities, but in fact it turns out that Google is the one making the most money.

On December 13, 2024, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who appeared on a podcast that lasted more than an hour, said, 'Google is making more money from Windows than Microsoft,' and talked about the power relationship between Google and Microsoft.

One of the reasons for Microsoft's defeat is its dominance in search. Microsoft developed the search engine Bing and recommended its use in the Edge browser, but because the Windows platform is open and allows users to use any browser they want, users do not necessarily use Edge or Bing. As a result, Microsoft has lost market share to Google, which dominates the search market.

Originally, Microsoft had monopolized the browser market share with 'Internet Explorer' since around the 1990s, and was subject to antitrust lawsuits from the US government for excluding other browsers such as Netscape.

But over the past decade, Google's rise has left Microsoft on the fringes of the market. 'This is a travesty,' Nadira said sarcastically. 'We beat Netscape, we lost to Google, and now Chrome is the dominant browser. Wow, that's great news for Microsoft shareholders. We got beat so badly that we're now in the mix.'

Nadira also expressed the same view about AI. Microsoft has developed an AI agent called 'Copilot' and installed it in Windows, and some laptops are equipped with a 'Copilot key' for invoking Copilot to guide users. However, because of its open nature, Nadira said there is room for other AIs such as Gemini and ChatGPT to enter the market.

Meanwhile, Apple has continued to adopt strategies that are hard to call open, such as not offering a default browser option until it received a corrective recommendation from the EU, and Google paying Apple a large amount of money to make Safari the default search engine. However, Microsoft has also reportedly been trying to secure a contract to have Bing adopted as the default search engine for Safari, raising questions about the legitimacy of Microsoft's 'openness.'

Regarding OpenAI, which has a partnership with Microsoft, also signing a deal with Apple, CEO Nadira said, 'I've been trying to get Apple's search contract for about 10 years, so I was very excited when Apple finally signed a deal with OpenAI.' CEO Nadira remains realistic about the AI competition, saying that AI is 'very competitive' but not a 'winner-take-all' scenario, suggesting that Microsoft is not ceding its position to other companies.
