When photographing a subject through a window, or a painting or showcase that is covered with transparent glass or plastic, the surrounding scenery is often reflected in the photo. Depending on the lighting, the reflection may be too clear and make it difficult to see the subject, even though you want to capture what is on the other side of the glass.

Adobe's Reflection Removal tool uses AI technology to remove reflections from photos taken through windows.

For example, the photo below was taken through a glass showcase, but the photographer was reflected in the glass, making it difficult to see the product.

This is what it looks like when you remove the reflections from this photo using the Reflection Removal tool.

Below is a photo of a tide pool along the coast. The smartphone and blue sky are reflected on the water, making it a little difficult to see what's below the surface.

After processing with the Reflection Removal tool, the sea anemones below the surface were clearly visible.

Adobe said, 'Removing window reflections is a difficult problem, and since this is our first attempt, there are bound to be some rough spots. For example, night cityscapes don't work very well right now. The key is to train the model to understand scenes that might exist in the real world. We're always improving our models, so stay tuned!'

The Reflection Removal tool was announced in 2023 as 'Sneak' and is currently available in the preview version of Adobe Camera Raw. It will be available in Lightroom soon.
