Bluesky raised $15 million in October 2024, revealing that it was developing paid subscriptions to provide premium features such as 'high-quality video uploads and profile customization such as colors and avatar frames.'
Bluesky has published a UI mockup for this subscription, called 'Bluesky+,' on GitHub. This includes the ' Bluesky+ logo ' and ' design code .' Bluesky says, 'These are just mockups. There is a high possibility that the features available in Bluesky+ will differ.'
In addition, Bluesky user rea reported that he 'found the registration screen for Bluesky+ on Bluesky.'
According to rea, Bluesky+ will allow users to 'use a badge to show that they are a Bluesky+ member,' 'customize their app icon,' 'customize their profile,' and 'increase the maximum length and image quality of videos they post.' Future features that will be added include 'post translation,' 'post analysis,' and 'organizing bookmarks into folders.'
The price of Bluesky+ is $8 (approx. JPY 1,200) per month or $72 (approx. JPY 10,800) per year.
Meanwhile, Dan Abramov, a software engineer at Bluesky, reported that 'these features may not necessarily match what will be released. The actual feature list will be announced as we further develop it.'
Abramov also explained why the unannounced Bluesky+ features were made public: 'Bluesky is an open source service, which means that anyone outside the company can see drafts, prototypes, and unfinished work on features. It's common for other companies to post bits of code internally as placeholder text and then replace it before going live, but we don't have that process.'
Regarding the features of Bluesky+, Abramov said, 'We will not prioritize subscribers' comments. We also have no plans to give users a 'paid checkmark' like the premium version of X (formerly Twitter). Even if users are able to add a profile badge indicating that they are a 'supporter,' we will make it possible to hide it. In addition, we will add a bookmark function to free users in the future.'
