In July 2024, an update by security software maker CrowdStrike caused 8.5 million Windows terminals to crash. Although the number of affected terminals was less than 1% of all Windows terminals, major airline Delta Airlines canceled more than 4,000 flights in five days, causing damages of $500 million (about 77 billion yen), and is suing CrowdStrike for damages.

In order to prevent these problems from recurring, Microsoft has announced the introduction of the Windows Resiliency Initiative as an effort to improve the reliability of Windows and ensure that it is a resilient platform. The Windows Resiliency Initiative has four key goals:

1: Strengthening reliability based on learnings from the CrowdStrike incident that occurred in July 2024
2: Allow more apps and users to run without admin privileges
3: Increase control over the apps and drivers you allow to run
4: Strengthen identity protection to prevent phishing attacks

To achieve this, the new feature 'Quick Machine Recovery,' which allows remote repair of unbootable PCs, will be available in the Windows Insider Program from the beginning of 2025. With 'Quick Machine Recovery,' IT administrators will be able to run any patch from Windows Update without physical access, even if the PC cannot be booted.

In addition, new features are being developed to enable security product developers to build their products outside of kernel mode to improve resiliency. These new features will reduce the impact on Windows in the event of a crash. A preview of the features is expected to be available from July 2025.
