According to Dr. Farah Monzour, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in Long Island, New York, sitting on the toilet for too long can cause blood to pool in your lower body, enlarging the blood vessels surrounding your intestines and putting you at risk for a variety of conditions.

Generally, toilet seats are oval-shaped, and people sit in a position that pushes their buttocks out, but this lowers the rectum and puts pressure on the buttocks. Blood gathers in the lower body due to gravity, and the increased pressure causes congestion in the anus and rectum, causing blood vessels to swell and increasing the risk of hemorrhoids. Straining too hard while trying to relieve oneself can also cause hemorrhoids.

Some people feel safe in the bathroom, and may look at their smartphones for long periods of time while sitting on the toilet seat. However, Monzur points out that 'sitting for long periods of time can lead to weakening of the anal muscles and damage to the pelvis, as well as causing rectal prolapse, in which part of the rectum protrudes from the anus.' He warned that sitting for long periods of time like this is not good for the anal organs.

To avoid sitting for long periods of time, 'keep your phone, magazines, and books out of the bathroom,' advises Lance Vladomo, MD, a gastroenterologist at City of Hope Orange County in Irvine, California.

Also, if you are having trouble with bowel movements due to constipation, Dr. Lai Xue, a surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, suggests stopping after 10 minutes. According to Xue, it's a good idea to stop sitting and walk around a bit, which will stimulate the intestinal muscles and encourage the urge to defecate.

'When patients come to me and say they just don't feel well, one of the things I have to ask them in detail is how much time they spend on the toilet. Sitting on the toilet for long periods of time is bad for your health. In addition to staying hydrated, it's also important to eat foods high in fibre, such as oats and legumes, to encourage regular bowel movements and reduce straining,' said Xue.
