Microsoft adds AI features to Paint and Notepad, allowing you to add objects to the canvas, erase objects, rephrase text, adjust tone, and change the length of content
On November 7, 2024, Microsoft announced new features that use generative AI for the standard Windows apps Paint and Notepad.
New AI experiences for Paint and Notepad begin rolling out to Windows Insiders | Windows Insider Blog
◆ New features of 'Paint'
Select an area in your image using the Rectangle or Freeform Selection tool and a menu pop-up will appear. Click on the “Generative fill” option.
Enter what you want to add in the text box and click 'Create'.
The AI will then add objects based on the prompts you entered. If you don't like the generated content, you can change it to a different object by clicking the 'Retry' button. Once you're satisfied with the object, click the 'Keep' button to apply it to the paint canvas.
This feature will be released for Copilot+ PC first.
They also announced a new 'generative erase' feature that removes unwanted objects from the canvas. To use generative erase, you select the unwanted parts of the canvas by painting them with a brush.
Click 'Apply'.
This will erase the selected object.
'Generative Erasing' can be used on devices other than Copilot+ PC.
◆ New features of 'Notepad'
The new feature added to the notepad allows you to rewrite sentences, adjust the tone, change the length of content, and more by simply selecting the part you want to rewrite and entering instructions into the prompts. If you don't like it, you can click 'try again' and a different sentence will be generated.
This feature is available to all Windows 11 users in the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy and Germany, but is not available in Japan at the time of writing.
The new Paint and Notepad features will be rolled out first to Windows 11 Canary channel and Windows Insider Program subscribers.
