Developed by Daniel Supernault, founder of the ActivityPub-compatible photo-focused social networking site Pixelfed , Loops allows users to upload and share videos up to 60 seconds long, with future features planned including the use of audio, remixing other users' videos, and pinning videos to your profile.

Pixelfed has released a preview of Loops in action, and Superno has also released a preview of Loops' profile screen.

As part of the open social web that runs on ActivitiPub, Loops allows users of other platforms that support ActivityPub, such as Mastodon and Pixelfed, to follow Loop users' accounts and watch, comment, and share videos. However, the company said it has not yet decided whether Loops users will be able to follow Mastodon users or share their profiles.

Loops, which relies on human moderators, moderates videos based on a user's trust score. Videos uploaded by users with a low trust score are held for moderation before being published, while users with a high trust score can publish their videos immediately without being held back. Superno explains that the trust score is also used to hide problematic comments on posts and to apply warnings to content.

In addition to responding to ActivityPub, Loops also emphasizes the importance of protecting users' personal information. Loops claims that it does not sell or provide user data to third-party advertisers, use content to train AI models, or acquire rights to content uploaded to the service. According to Loops, users simply allow Loops to use their content, and full ownership of their posts remains with the user.

In preparation for the launch of its service, Loops plans to conduct beta testing using Apple's testing service TestFlight and as a side-loadable Android app, and pre-registration is currently being accepted on Loops' official website.

In addition, Superno is seeking feedback from the community on Loops' terms of use and privacy policy on his Mastodon account, and is also recruiting moderators.
