After food poisoning cases were reported in several states in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began an investigation on October 22, 2024, and found that most patients reported having eaten McDonald's Quarter Pounders.

As of the 22nd, 49 cases of illness had been reported in 10 states, and the CDC warned, 'If you experience severe symptoms of E. coli after eating a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, contact your health care provider.'

According to the CDC, as of October 23, McDonald's is investigating which foods may have been affected. In response to the investigation, McDonald's has suspended the use of 'fresh sliced onions' and 'Quarter Pounder beef patties,' which are only used in Quarter Pounders.

According to foreign media Reuters, following the food poisoning cases at McDonald's, famous fast food chains such as Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Burger King have stopped using onions in certain stores.

In response to this situation, Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, issued a statement saying that it would remove raw onions from the menu at some of its restaurants. Burger King also announced that it had removed onions from the menu at about 5% of its restaurants.

McDonald's said the onion slices were supplied by Taylor Farms, and while Taylor Farms said it had not detected any E. coli, it is recalling the products as a precaution. Taylor Farms said, 'We continue to work closely with the FDA and CDC.'
