The Internet Archive, which has a service called 'Wayback Machine' that stores websites, was hit by a DDoS attack in October 2024, causing its services to go down and go offline. At that time, when accessing the site, a pop-up message was displayed saying, 'Have you ever thought that the Internet Archive is unstable and could suffer a devastating security breach at any time? That has now happened. See you, 31 million people, at HIBP,' revealing that 31 million user data had actually been leaked.

The hacker group BlackMeta has claimed responsibility for the DDoS attack. Troy Hunt, a security expert and developer of the data leak confirmation service ' Have I been pwned? ', believes that the DDoS attack and data leak were just a coincidence of actions by different groups.

The Internet Archive, which had been down, was restored to its 'Wayback Machine' in a read-only state with the saving function disabled on the afternoon of October 14th, Japan time.

On October 15th, the Wayback Machine finally returned to processing 1,500 requests per second.

However, all functions of the Internet Archive other than the Wayback Machine are still down, and CEO Brewster Kahle said he would provide more details at a later date.

The Internet Archive was also hit by a DDoS attack in May 2024, causing its service to be temporarily halted.
