OpenAI releases 'Canvas', an app that allows users to code and write in collaboration with ChatGPT

The beta version of ' Canvas ', an app that allows users to collaborate with ChatGPT on tasks such as writing and coding, was released on October 3, 2024. At the time of writing, beta testing is being conducted for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and it will be available to free users after the test is over.

Canvas allows you to 'enter a draft of text or code into ChatGPT and have it clean up,' and 'correct parts of the text generated by ChatGPT manually or by asking ChatGPT to do so.' Inside, a 'model trained for collaborative GPT-4o' runs, and OpenAI describes Canvas as 'the first major update to ChatGPT's visual interface since its release.'

Here's an example of how to write a sentence using Canvas: First, enter a draft and ask 'Write a blog post based on the draft,' and the sentence for the blog post will be generated according to your instructions.

When you select the part of the generated text you want to correct, ChatGPT will suggest corrections.

You can also give your own edits, such as 'make it more creative.' You can also rewrite the text to match the reader's level of knowledge, or add relevant emojis.

Of course, you can also type text yourself. You can quickly write text by combining your own input with ChatGPT's automatic work.

Here's a coding example: If you ask something like 'Help me write an API for a web server in Rust,' it will generate a code template.

Enter a description of the code you want to add.

It will then generate the code for you as instructed.

You can also give instructions like 'add comments to the code.' You can also port it to another programming language, or find and fix bugs.

Karina Nguyen , an AI researcher at OpenAI, has published several examples of using Canvas. In the following example, she uses Canvas to create a report on art history with citing references.

It is also possible to generate recipes for dishes that can be made with ingredients on hand and organize them in an easy-to-read format.

Canvas is currently in beta testing for ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team subscribers, and will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu next week. After the beta testing is complete, Canvas will be available to free users as well.
