Construction of the Joanina Library began under King João V of Portugal in 1717. The building is made of South American wood and is influenced by the Chinoiserie style that was popular at the time. The three-story building houses books on medicine, geography, history, humanities, science, civil law, philosophy, theology, and more. The building is also known for having a colony of bats that help eradicate pests that damage the books.
