Founded in 2022, Rapidus is a semiconductor manufacturer established with government support to support Japan's semiconductor manufacturing industry.

The factory under construction in Chitose City from 2023 will have a prototype line up and running by 2025, with pilot production to begin by 2026. Production of 2nm process rule products is scheduled to start in 2027, and there are plans to update the facilities to accommodate the production of 1.4nm process rule products in the future.

However, it is said that an investment of 5 trillion yen is required to mass-produce semiconductors using the 2nm process rule.

The Japanese government initially provided 330 billion yen in support, and in April 2024 decided to provide an additional 590 billion yen in support , bringing the total support to Rapidus to 920 billion yen.

Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg, investments from companies had only reached 7.3 billion yen, and the company is seeking a new investment of 100 billion yen, of which 80 billion yen will come from existing shareholders such as Toyota Motor Corporation, SoftBank, Sony Group, and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, while 20 billion yen will come from Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and the Development Bank of Japan.

Rapidus has not made any specific comments on the matter.
