According to TSMC, the first factory will be operational in February 2024 and mass production is expected to begin within the year. The second semiconductor factory will also begin construction in Kumamoto Prefecture by the end of 2024, aiming to be operational by the end of 2027.
The first and second factories will produce semiconductors for automotive, industrial and consumer applications, with a total production capacity of more than 100,000 12-inch wafers per month based on 40nm, 22/28nm, 12/16nm and 6/7nm process rules. In addition, the two factories in Kumamoto are expected to create jobs for more than 3,400 high-tech professionals.
TSMC said that its total investment in JASM will exceed $20 billion when combined with fabs 1 and 2, including investment from the Japanese government.
Regarding TSMC's announcement that it will build a second factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kumamoto Governor Ikuo Kabashima commented, 'I am very pleased and would like to express my heartfelt welcome. I have been looking forward to this day coming.' He added, 'I believe this is a historic decision that will mark a major step forward toward realizing the new Silicon Island of Kyushu and toward our goal of playing an important role in Japan's economic security. As a prefecture, we will work to speed up environmental improvements such as eliminating congestion on surrounding roads and dealing with water intake and discharge, and the entire prefecture will work together to ensure that the acceptance of the second factory goes smoothly.'
