Musk was reported to have discussed cryptocurrency policy with Trump in June 2024, and after the shooting of Trump in July 2024, he said, 'I fully support Trump and wish him a speedy recovery.'

And at a campaign event at the Economic Club of New York held on September 5, 2024, Trump declared, 'I will establish a Government Efficiency Commission whose mission is to conduct a full financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and make recommendations for fundamental reform.' Trump also said, 'This is a proposal from Elon Musk, who has expressed his complete and total support for me.'

Trump has pledged to 'cut 10 government regulations for every new one we put in place,' and said the commission's sweeping reform recommendations could save trillions of dollars within six months of being established.

Musk raised the idea of an efficiency commission with Trump in an interview in August 2024 and expressed support for the commission.

With all of this in mind, the Government Efficiency Commission will be led by Musk. Musk is believed to have agreed to lead the committee, and on Twitter he said, 'I'm ready to serve.'

Musk also said, 'If the opportunity arises, I would be excited to serve the United States Government without compensation, title or recognition.'

The Wall Street Journal, a foreign media outlet, pointed out that 'if Trump actually establishes a Government Efficiency Commission, it will give Musk broad powers over federal agencies,' and ' Musk's companies, such as SpaceX and Neuralink, are regulated by numerous government agencies, so these regulations could have a major impact.'
