What are the results of a survey asking GIGAZINE readers, 'Have you ever felt like a 'corporate slave'?'

The full-color manga '

The Part-Time Life of a Hero and a Corporate Slave ' serialized in GIGAZINE is a story about Kuzuru, who is busy working as a 'hero' who exterminates monsters in another world and a 'corporate slave' who works at a Japanese game company. In the past, as part of a linked project for the series, we conducted a survey of GIGAZINE readers asking, ' Have you ever felt like a 'corporate slave'? ' We received many heart-wrenching stories, so we compiled the results of the survey.

The survey results are from several years ago, so we are also conducting an updated survey. Whether you answered the survey back then or are just finding out about the work or project for the first time, we invite you to share stories that you can laugh about now, or stories that you still can't laugh about.

More than 8,000 people responded to the survey. First, in response to the question, 'Have you ever felt like a 'corporate slave'?', 14% of respondents answered 'Yes,' and 86% answered 'I'm not a corporate slave.'

The age distribution of those who answered 'Yes' is as follows. The majority of respondents are in their late 20s to late 40s.

In addition, the percentages by gender are as follows: Approximately 85% of all respondents were male and 15% were female, but only 14% of male respondents answered that they had 'felt like a corporate slave,' while only 15% of female respondents answered that they had 'felt like a corporate slave,' showing almost no difference.

Additionally, those who answered 'I've felt like a corporate slave' were also asked to state their industry. Particularly many of them were in IT-related jobs, primarily systems engineering. Also, in manufacturing and sales jobs, if they can't meet their quotas or goals, the finishing time keeps getting longer, and in clerical jobs, they tend to work overtime or take home work that they can't handle, which led to many people answering 'I've felt like a corporate slave.' In addition, while 'The Part-Time Life of a Hero and Corporate Slave' is set in a game company, there were also many stories of corporate slaves from creative occupations such as game-related, anime and TV production, and web and 3D design.

Below are the results of collating over 1,000 corporate slave stories into a word cloud. The most common references were to 'time' and 'overtime,' simply complaining about the difficulties of long working hours with almost no time for rest or sleep. Another popular word was 'corona,' with many comments along the lines of, 'Even though I was being asked to stay home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to go to work for work.'

Additionally, many people seemed to feel that the current situation, where they are unable to quit because such work has become the norm, on top of the extremely long working hours and overtime hours, a clear lack of manpower required for the work, and unreasonable demands for attendance and behavior, is what makes them 'corporate slaves.'

In addition, the most common occupations, 'IT,' 'engineer,' and 'programmer,' were analyzed in a word cloud format below. As with the overall results, 'time' and 'overtime' stand out, and you can see that working hours are tough, with 'all-nighters' and 'last trains' on the list.

Below is a word cloud of corporate slave stories shared by creative people, including designers, illustrators, and content creators. Here too, words like 'time,' 'overtime,' and 'all-nighters' as well as 'staying overnight' and 'bath' convey the harshness of the job. In addition, creative people, whether they are freelancers or employed at a company, seem to feel a lot of pressure to complete the work they have on their own, and the word 'myself' also stands out.

The protagonist of 'The Part-Time Life of a Hero and a Corporate Slave,' Kuzuru, works at a very shady game company, so here are some of the results of a survey of creators, limited to game companies. As expected, it seems that they are troubled by the working hours, and there are also opinions that there are many cases where they end up working overtime because they work closely with others, such as 'clients,' 'meetings,' and 'presentations,' and they are unable to do anything about it.

In the next article, we will introduce some of the specific stories of the company slaves that have been sent in, so please look forward to it. We are also looking forward to new stories of the company slaves, so please post them in the questionnaire form below or on X (formerly Twitter)!
