Shambhezadeh is a long-time critic of Iran's leadership, who has campaigned for supporting political prisoners and abolishing the hijab requirement. She was jailed in 2019 for 'insulting the sanctity and leadership of the Islamic Republic.'
On May 2, 2024, Shambezadeh replied to a post made by Ayatollah Khamenei on X with '.' Shambezadeh's post received far more 'likes' than Khamenei's original post.

However, Iranian security authorities arrested Mr. Shambezadeh on June 4, 2024. Upon his arrest, Mr. Shambezadeh told his family, 'I don't know why I was arrested.' At the time of writing, Mr. Shambezadeh's X account has been frozen.
On August 31, 2024, the court sentenced Shambhezadeh to a total of 12 years in prison: five years for 'pro-Israel propaganda activities,' four years for 'insulting the sanctities of Islam,' two years for 'spreading lies on social media,' and one year for 'anti-regime propaganda activities.'
On the other hand, Shambezadeh's lawyer, Amir Raisian, pointed out that 'the court has not presented evidence that proves that Shambezadeh engaged in 'pro-Israel propaganda activities.'' Therefore, Raisian has revealed his intention to appeal after discussing with Shambezadeh. The Iranian Prosecutor's Office claims that 'Shambezadeh was arrested because he had contact with Israeli intelligence and was trying to leave the country.'
