Lightning , which emits a rumble and a dazzling light, is an intense discharge phenomenon that occurs when there is a potential difference in the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and the ground. While many people fear it, some are fascinated by its beauty. While we don't encounter lightning very often in our daily lives, there are always lightning occurring somewhere on Earth. ' Lightning & Thunderstorms ' is a world map that allows you to see where lightning is occurring on Earth in real time.

Lightning & Thunderstorms is run by Blitzortung.org, a project that uses dedicated 'stations' set up by volunteers to collect data and map where lightning is occurring in real time. Lightning & Thunderstorms uses the data collected by these stations to show where lightning is occurring on Earth in real time.

When you open Lightning & Thunderstorms, you'll see a world map like this:

The map shows the locations where lightning has occurred in real time as red circles. The green lines extending from the circles point to lightning monitoring stations. These stations monitor the signals accompanying lightning discharges, allowing them to detect lightning that is far away and invisible to the naked eye.

Whether or not lightning can be observed depends on the location of the station, but at the time of writing, lightning was occurring frequently from the central to eastern United States, from Eastern Europe to

the Anatolian Peninsula , the East China Sea, and around the southeastern tip of Australia.

Click on the item on the left to see an enlarged map of a particular area. In this case, click on 'Asia.'

You can then see the locations of stations in Asia and the points where lightning occurred.

In addition, you can narrow down your search to a specific country by region, but it seems that the countries you can narrow down are limited to those with many stations. This time, there was 'Japan', so I clicked it.

You can see a map of Japan including Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

When lightning occurs nearby, a green line extends from the station in Japan. At the time of writing, there was a lot of lightning near the sea south of Kyushu, possibly due to the approaching Typhoon No. 10.

Also, the areas where lightning struck most frequently during this time were in the Midwestern United States, near

Iowa , Illinois , and Missouri .

'Lightning & Thunderstorms' is also available in Japanese.
