Survey finds most new in-car tech deemed 'unnecessary'

Modern cars are packed with many innovative technologies, such as '

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)' and screens for passengers in the front seat. However, a survey by market research firm JD Power revealed that many drivers feel that these technologies are 'unnecessary.'

In recent years, automobiles have been equipped with features such as 'smart climate control,' which adjusts the air conditioning inside the car in response to changes in temperature, humidity, etc., and these features have become popular among users. However, many users have pointed out that technologies installed in automobiles, such as face recognition, fingerprint readers, and gesture control, 'have problems' or 'are lacking in functionality.'

JD Power conducted a survey of 81,926 consumers asking them whether they considered certain technologies in their vehicles to be 'essential,' 'nice to have,' or 'unnecessary.' 'Having a strong advanced technology strategy is critical for all automakers, and many of these innovative technologies are addressing customer needs,' said Kathleen Ritzk, senior director of technology at JD Power.

The JD Power survey revealed that despite the increasing availability of ADAS, most drivers say they consider them either 'nice to have' or 'not necessary.' While most drivers appreciated ADAS features that directly addressed their specific concerns, such as 'warning about blind spots while driving,' they also said they were 'perfectly capable of driving without relying on features like ADAS.'

Some automakers are also expanding the availability of vehicles with a second display for passengers, but many drivers say they don't need the feature. JD Power noted, 'While frequent passengers may view the feature favorably, only 10% of drivers have passengers in the passenger seat every day, and a second screen would make the vehicle more complicated by requiring drivers to learn how to use multiple displays.'

In addition, many users expressed dissatisfaction with Tesla's vehicles, which often feature innovative technologies such as autopilot and full self-driving (FSD) ahead of other companies. JD Power said that Tesla may be losing its technological advantage, with low satisfaction rates for features such as 'Direct Driver Monitoring,' which recognizes the driver's face and warns about safe driving.

'The 2024 survey revealed that there are technologies that drivers rarely use or find annoying,' Ritsuku said of the survey.

Additionally, J.D. Power ranks automakers and brands that offer superior technology, with

Genesis taking the top spot for the fourth consecutive year, followed by Lexus in second and BMW .

Among mass market brands, South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company topped the list for the fifth consecutive year.
