Trailer for the movie 'Kitaro's Birth: The Mystery of Gegege: True Version' [Released on Friday, October 4, 2024, R15+] - YouTube

This film is a theatrical version of the 'GeGeGe no Kitaro' series, but it does not focus on Kitaro. Rather, it depicts the events that occurred when Kitaro's father, who later becomes Medama Oyaji, and Mizuki, an office worker, met in a closed village called 'Nakakura Village.'

The film's popularity grew with the two men facing the fate of a family living in a village trapped by tradition, the heartbreaking story that brings in a glimmer of hope, and the flashy action scenes typical of monster movies, earning 2.79 billion yen at the box office and attracting a total of 1.95 million viewers. It won the Japan Academy Prize for Excellence in Animation, and was also screened overseas, where it was nominated for the Contrechamps category at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

The film being released this time is the 'real version' which retakes 327 cuts from the 2023 version to improve the quality and restores the horror scenes. Because of this, the Eirin rating has been changed from PG-12 to R15+.

The main cast and director have made the following comments about the real version.

Toshihiko Seki, who plays Kitaro's father:
'The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe' is being shown again? What on earth is that supposed to mean? I was wondering, and it turns out that it's being shown again under the title 'The Real Version.'
So this is the different version with a changed rating that I had heard about some time ago!
Moreover, when you hear that it is 'a terrifying story that the production team originally envisioned,' you have no choice but to watch it.
The number of new retakes is also surprising.
To date, this film has evolved into something more than just a theatrical film, through various collaborations such as events and merchandise development.
This time, we will be boldly presenting the main story and asking you once again what the appeal of this movie is.
Whether you're a fan of 'The Birth of Kitaro' or have never seen it before, don't miss this opportunity!

Hidenobu Kiuchi, voice of Mizuki:
Initially, the director told me that he wanted to create a more extreme version of this film aimed at adults, but I never thought the day would come when we would be able to see that version, especially in a theater!
This film has been released with a PG-12 rating, but I am looking forward to seeing what the production team had in mind.
Since the film's release last year, there have been a lot of different events, and we are very happy to see that it continues to be loved by everyone.
We look forward to seeing you at the theater for the special edition 'The Birth of Kitaro: The Real Life Version of the GeGeGe Mystery'!

Director Go Koga:
That was exactly one year ago, when we were taking on the new challenge of turning Kitaro into a horror movie for adults. We on the staff agonized and agonized over how far we could go in terms of expression, and with our overwhelming desire we decided to take a half step back, and the PG-12 version is the result.
We are very fortunate to have received so much support from our customers that we are now able to release this film in theaters as the 'real version,' exactly as we originally intended.
Some people may be worried about the R15+ classification, but I promise you that 'The Birth of Kitaro: The GeGeGe Mystery - Real Version' has of course focused on the parts related to the rating, but rather on brushing up the visuals themselves.
Rather than being 'horrifying,' the story has a more 'mysterious beauty,' which will leave you more deeply enthralled and moved.
Please come and see it at the theater.

The film 'The Birth of Kitaro: The GeGeGe Mystery - True Version,' which the production team says is 'what they originally wanted to create,' will be released on Friday, October 4, 2024.
