[Sad news] Voice actress Atsuko Tanaka, known for her roles as Kusanagi Motoko in 'Ghost in the Shell' and Caster in 'Fate/stay night,' passes away



Voice actress Atsuko Tanaka, who played many dignified female roles such as Kusanagi Motoko in the anime series 'Ghost in the Shell,' Caster in 'Fate/stay night,' Bayonetta in 'BAYONETTA,' Mary Sera in 'Detective Conan,' and many other voiceover roles, passed away today, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, her son, fellow voice actress Hikaru Tanaka, reported. She was 61 years old. Tanaka had been battling illness for the past year.

Atsuko Tanaka was born in Gunma Prefecture in November 1962. She was in the drama club in junior high school and the dance club in high school.

After working as a company employee, she became a voice actress at the age of 27. She voiced Yuka Myras, a member of the Shurack Corps, in the TV anime 'Mobile Suit Victory Gundam' broadcast from 1993 to 1994, and guest heroine Karen in the TV special 'Lupin the Third' broadcast in 1993, 'Order to Assassinate Lupin.'

The role of Kusanagi Motoko, which she played in the 1995 film 'Ghost in the Shell,' has become her signature role for nearly 30 years, until 'Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045,' which was released in two series from 2020 to 2022.

In addition, she voices one of the servants, Caster, in the anime 'Fate/stay night,' which is based on the game of the same name. Since the first TV anime was broadcast in 2006, it has been made into multiple anime and games.

In dubbing, she has worked on Charlize Theron, who played Cipher in the 'Fast and Furious' series, Monica Bellucci in 'Alex', and Kate Beckinsale, who played Selene in the 'Underworld' series. Most recently, she played Riley's mother in the animated film 'Inside Out 2', which was released in August 2024, following the previous work.
