METs is an index that shows how many times the energy consumed by various activities, with 1 MET being equivalent to sitting quietly. The more oxygen you consume during physical activity, the higher the METs value.

Hendrix also calculated the calories burned per distance for walking and running, and found that the faster you walk the more calories you burn per distance, whereas running is more efficient depending on the distance.



In conclusion, Hendrix said, 'Walking slowly is most effective. But if you absolutely must run, running at about seven minutes per mile is most effective.'
