Online storage company MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom to be extradited to the US

It has been revealed that New Zealand's Minister of Justice has signed an extradition warrant to the United States for Kim Dotcom (formerly Kim Schmitz), a New Zealand resident who is the founder of MegaUpload, an online storage service that made huge profits from distributing pirated content and was subsequently cracked down on by the FBI.

Kim Dotcom was arrested in Auckland, New Zealand, along with co-founder Matthias Oltmann and executive Bram van der Kolk during the FBI raid on MegaUpload in 2012.

The three men fought a long battle against extradition to the United States, but in 2022, Oltmann and van der Kolk agreed to a plea bargain and chose to serve their sentences in New Zealand, with Oltmann receiving a sentence of two years and seven months and van der Kolk receiving a sentence of two years and six months. As a result, only Dotcom's status was not yet determined.

'After careful consideration of all the information, I have decided that Dotcom should be extradited to the United States to stand trial,' New Zealand's Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said.

In response to the news, Dotcom posted: 'Oh no. Don't panic, I have a plan.' 'I love New Zealand and I'm not leaving.'

The NZ Herald points out that the Minister of Justice signing the extradition warrant is just one step, and completing the extradition could take several years.
