Rakuten has been actively using OpenAI's AI technology in its business operations, such as running an in-house chatbot using GPT-3.5, even before the release of ChatGPT-4's enterprise plan 'ChatGPT Enterprise.' In August 2023, Rakuten announced a collaboration with OpenAI, and in November 2023, it announced 'Rakuten AI for Business,' an AI platform aimed at supporting corporate activities.

Rakuten operates over 70 online services, including Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Securities, and has over 1.8 billion users worldwide. As a result, Rakuten has accumulated a huge amount of transaction data and behavioral data, as well as a large amount of internal documents such as PDF files and Word files. Although much of this data is unstructured, Rakuten creates value from data by utilizing 'RAG (Search Augmentation Generation) ', which incorporates external information into the AI model to improve answer accuracy, and the code generation function 'Code Interpreter'.

Rakuten has used RAG to build an AI system that can generate answers based on information from the company's internal knowledge base. This has significantly reduced the time it takes to respond to user inquiries. The company has also developed a system that extracts important topics from reviews of each product sold on Rakuten Ichiba and displays a 'review summary.'

In addition, by incorporating market analysis data and sales trend data accumulated by Rakuten into AI, it is now possible to provide actionable insights to retailers and companies.

OpenAI is developing an AI function that uses cameras and microphones to analyze surrounding audio and visual elements and respond in real time. Rakuten has also shown interest in this function, and is considering building a system that would input internal meeting data, which only has audio data, into AI to create meeting action items and multilingual translations, and provide users with a conversational AI experience and analyze their needs based on the content of their conversations.

In addition, Rakuten and OpenAI announced the development of AI tools for the telecommunications industry in February 2024. In addition, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap and Rakuten's Tin Tsai CAIDO (Chief AI & Data Officer) will hold a talk event titled 'What Comes Next After Generative AI'. The contents of the talk event can be viewed in the following movie.
