Someone disguises a PlayStation 5 development kit as a 'pizza cooking set' and resells it for 1 million yen

It was reported on X (formerly Twitter) that non-retail PlayStation 5 (PS5) development kits distributed to manufacturers were being sold off disguised as pizza cooking sets.

X-user consolevariations posted on July 5, 2024, 'Someone has sold a PS5 dev kit as a 'PlayStation Pizza Kit' and it seems they managed to sell it for 6,050 euros. It looks like they did this to avoid Sony getting their eye on them for selling off the dev kit.'

The screenshot attached by consolevariations shows a slice of pizza placed in the V-shaped groove of the console, with a spatula featuring the PlayStation logo even attached.

In addition, you can see the appearance of the PlayStation 5 development kit before it was disguised from the following article.

According to Tom's Hardware, an IT news site that covered the post, development kits are tightly controlled and distributed, and game developers and studios who resell development kits are removed from the list of recipients, so this does not normally happen.

Tom's Hardware commented, 'The frozen pizza isn't the most exciting thing, but the custom spatula pictured with the console does grab your attention. Just below the head of the spatula is the classic PlayStation logo.'

Generally, when a dev kit for a game console is on the market, it means that a game development studio has either been closed down or robbed, or the existence of the next game console has been leaked through the existence of the dev kit. For example, the leak of the PS5 Pro dev kit in December 2023 led to the leak of the full specs in March 2024.

As this post became a hot topic, a post that appears to be the original screenshot posted in 2021 was also unearthed.

The poster, Lance McDonald, also included a screenshot of a photo of the spatula actually being used. Tom's Hardware investigated the post, but unfortunately was unable to confirm it.

'In any case, if the PS5 development kit shown in the photo or any other development kit is used in a context other than that for which it was intended, it is highly likely that it will become unusable once connected to Sony's PlayStation servers. Modern development kits are tightly controlled in the age of always-on connectivity, and this will be no exception,' said Tom's Hardware.
