Animeflix was a copyright infringement site that distributed a number of works, mainly Japanese anime, and according to technology media Ars Technica, 'it was popular for its clean interface and was sometimes described as the 'Netflix of the anime world.''

Animeflix was shut down around July 5, 2024 local time. Animeflix's management posted a message on the Discord community, which has 35,000 members, saying, 'After careful consideration, we have decided to immediately shut down the service. We are deeply grateful for your support and enthusiasm over the years.'

The reason for the closure is unclear, but foreign media TorrentFreak reports that Animeflix has faced multiple legal challenges in recent months, which may have contributed to the closure.

In December 2023, anti-piracy organization ACE (Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment) demanded the shutdown of Animeflix, and in mid-May 2024, rights holders including Netflix, Disney, Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. won an injunction through the Indian High Court against several pirate sites, including Animeflix.

As a result of the above measures, Animeflix was temporarily unavailable, but they continued to distribute pirated content by switching to a different domain. However, despite Animeflix's resistance, it has now finally been shut down.

According to TorrentFreak, Animeflix is believed to have been hosted by the Hungarian provider ServerAstra, and the torrent site MagnetDL, which was also hosted by ServerAstra, was shut down just a week ago. TorrentFreak noted that the successive closures of two pirate sites hosted by the same provider 'may be a coincidence, but it's striking.'

'We hope that the joy and excitement of anime will continue to brighten your days through our other great platforms,' Animeflix said in a statement.

Piracy of content is increasing year by year, and some believe that the United States alone is losing $29 billion (approximately 4.65 trillion yen) a year. According to experts, six of the top ten works by number of viewers of piracy content are from Japan or South Korea. In the United States, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is expanding the scope of its monitoring of piracy sites and working to eradicate them.
