Meta announces partial lifting of ban on word 'shahid' (martyr)

Meta had effectively banned the use of the word 'shahid,' which is used in Islam to mean 'martyr,' because it was 'associated with violent language.' However, there was a problem that posts using the word in a non-violent context were also deleted. On July 2, 2024, Meta announced the results of its deliberations on 'shahid,' revealing that it had decided to allow its use as long as it was not related to a specific topic.

Meta had taken steps to remove 'posts using the word 'shaheed' in connection with what it considers to be dangerous organizations and individuals.'

However, 'shahid' is a word that has multiple meanings depending on the context, and even if it refers to a dangerous entity, it does not necessarily mean that it glorifies or supports violence. There have been a number of cases where posts, even those that are news reports, neutral discussions, or even posts that condemn violence, have been deleted simply for using the word 'shahid,' leading to calls for correction from Arabic-speaking and Muslim communities.

Following deliberations by the Oversight Committee, Meta announced that it would change its policy on July 2, 2024 to 'allow the word 'shaheed' across the board, except when combined with other violating content or in conjunction with the three signals of violence specified by the Committee.'

The three signals the Board specified are 'visual depictions of armed persons/weapons,' 'statements intending or advocating the use or carrying of armed persons/weapons,' and 'specific events as Meta specifies otherwise.' Use of the word 'shaheed' in connection with these may still result in posts being censored.

Meta bans designated 'organizations or individuals that proclaim or engage in violent missions,' such as terrorist or hate groups, from its platform, and also restricts content that glorifies, materially supports, or represents them.
